2010 Shell active chess goes to Naga

The expanded 2010 Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship moves to its fourth stage for the Southern Luzon eliminations on July 31 -August 1 at SM City Naga’s Event Center in Naga City .

Registration for the Southern Luzon eliminations has begun with a deadline set one week before the tournament date. Fee is P50 on a first-come, first-served basis.

Interested participants may download registration forms by logging on to www.shell.com.ph/shell_chess. Registration is also available at selected schools, chess clubs and municipal/provincial government offices and at various Shellane Showrooms nationwide.  For further details, participants may also contact leg coordinators NM Glenn Artuz at 0918-5051825 or (054) 4750623 or Alex Dinoy at 0916-6882682 or 0921-3806902 or (02) 400-3248.

The Naga event is part of the Southern Luzon eliminations, with the first held in Batangas City two weeks ago. A maximum field of 500 is expected to participate in the Naga leg.

Following the Naga leg, Shell Active Chess will proceed to Iloilo on August 14-15 for the Western Visayas eliminations, Cebu on August 28-29 for the Central Visayas eliminations, Cagayan de Oro on September 11 – 12 and Davao on September 25 – 26 for the Mindanao eliminations.

The top three players of the Naga leg in both the 20-and-under and 14-and-under categories will join the other top finishers in the other legs in the national finals slated in October at SM Megamall with the junior champion taking home P30,000 and the kiddies winner receiving P20,000. Each leg will be an eight-round Swiss system event for the juniors and nine-round for the kiddies. The grand finals will be a nine-round tournament for both divisions.

Shell Active Chess is organized by Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation and is the nation’s longest running, grassroots-based chess tournament. Through Shell Active Chess, Pilipinas Shell endeavours to empower the Filipino youth, in line with the company’s commitment to sustainable development.

Shell Active Chess is sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and supported by Shell V-Power, Shellane, Shell Helix, and McDonald’s, in partnership with SM Supermalls, Cagayan Colleges Tuguegarao, Central Philippine University Iloilo, University of San Carlos Cebu, and Cagayan de Oro City Tourism.

BOOK DAY - SM City Naga joined the simultaneous celebration of the National Children's Book Day held in all the 38 SM malls nationwide last July 20, 2010. HONEST GUARD - SM City Naga Foodcourt lady guard Jaena Corazon Abay of Cougar Security Agency handed in to the owner the short brown envelope containing 40 pieces dated checks amounting to P600,000 she recovered when she made her rounds in the place. Abay was commended by the management for being a model security guard.
