Iriga mayor in Shanghai forum

Iriga Mayor Madelaine Alfelor-Gazmen has been invited to sit as one of the panelists in one of the forums organized during the closing activities of the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China, on Sept. 10, this year.

Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng said in his letter to the lady mayor, who along with Gawad Kalinga founder Antonio Meloto, are the only Filipinos invited as panelists.

“In appreciation of your success in local governance, we would be honored by your presence as panelist in the “Local Leaders Roundtable: Villages, Towns & Small Cities in a Global Context” at the theme forum on “Economic Transformations and Urban-Rural Relations,” Han said.

According to Mayor Han, the summit forum is organized around the theme “Better City, Better Life,” and is meant to explore topics related to sustainable urban development like information technology,  cultural heritage, technological innovation, climate change, urban-rural relations and economic transformation, and livable cities.

Han added that the summit forum is co-organized by the World Bank, the National Development and Reform Commission of China, the Shaoxing Municipal Government, and the Shanghai  World Expo Executive Committee.

The organizers will shoulder the panelists’ roundtrip airfare, meals, accommodation and inland transportation as well as the two-day tour of the Expo Park in Shanghai.

Gazmen will be joined by the vice district mayor, Jiulongpo District of the Chongqing City, China; Adolfo Antonio Fetter Jr., mayor of the city of Pelotas, State of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil; Gorica Dimcic-Tasic,  mayor of the city of Svilajac, in Serbia; Mirjam Salet, mayor of the city of Spijkenisse in the Netherlands; and Shri P. Swaroop, commissioner of the Jamnagar Municipal Corporation in India.

Bruno Andre Laporte, manager of the Human Development Group of the World Bank Institute and Kathy Cui, news presenter of China Business Networks, will act as moderators during  the discussion.

GK founder Antonio Meloto will sit as panelist in the first Parallel Session on Urban-Rural Integration and Public Services Equalization scheduled earlier on Sept. 8. – fpj
