Congress lauds Bicolana beauty

The House of Representatives on Aug. 25 unanimously adopted House Resolution No. 287 “Commending Ms. Maria Venus Raj for her achievement in winning Fourth Runner-Up in the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant 2010 and for instilling pride in her fellow Bicolanos and the rest of the Filipinos”.

The Resolution was filed by Rep. Emmanuel D. Pacquiao of the Lone District of Sarangani and AKO Bicol (AKB) Partylist representatives – Rep. Christopher S. Co, Rep. Rodel M. Batocabe, and Rep. Alfredo A. Garbin Jr.

It will be recalled that prior to the competition, Ms. Raj paid a courtesy call to Rep. Pacquiao where he expressed his support and encouragement for Ms. Raj.

The pageant was held in Mandalay Bay Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, where Pacquiao’s previous fights were also held.

Rep. Rodel Batocabe said that she has set a good example not only to her fellow Bicolanos but to Filipinos as well. “She is a good inspiration to our youth as she overcame her humble beginnings and tremendous difficulties to reach her dreams by winning numerous titles”.

Raj won the crown for Binibining Pilipinas-Universe last March 6, 2010, which secured her the chance to represent the Philippines in the recently concluded Miss Universe 2010.

Amidst several issues that surrounded her and the country in the days before the competition, she has persisted for the title that she deserved and has made fellow Bicolanos proud. Her mere entry to the Top 5 finalists is achievement enough for the country and for all Filipinos, who have prayed for and supported her throughout the competition.
