NAGA CITY — More than 5,000 books from SM Foundation and SM City Naga were received by school principals and heads of different public and elementary schools in this city and Del Gallego, Camarines Sur in separate events last Sept. 24 and 25, this year.
The book donation was part of the SM’s Donate-A-Book project aimed at beefing up the teaching capabilities of public schools by way of augmenting the number of their textbook and workbook materials.
Since its inception over a decade ago, the mall-based outreach project was able to generate and donate over three million books for more than 15,000 public and secondary schools in the country, including provincial and barangay-based libraries and daycare centers.
Mall Managers Engr. Wesley Villanueva and Jeannette De Vera assured the public of SM’s continued support in the acquisition of books by different learning institutions especially those in the countryside whose students come mostly from poor families.
SM Public Relations Officer Tina Sumayao said other than SM officials who are seriously pursuing the project, the Donate-A-Book undertaking becomes a truly successful endeavor because of the support being extended by the Department of Social Welfare and Development, along with the Philippine Information Agency, the National Book Development Board, the Adarna Book House and the Children International Foundation.
